With the Steam Winter sale still going, this is an ideal time to check the store for any unplayed gems you might have missed throughout the year. If you ended up buying a Steam Deck in 2022, here are some of the best deals you should buy this Christmas season.
Celeste – $5 (down from $20)
This is a great platformer game, albeit a difficult and punishing one. Many controllers have been thrown into walls with the help of this game, but underneath its tough exterior lies an excellent game. You will take control of Celeste and make your way through many different biomes on your quest to scale a mountain. The level design is top-notch, somewhat reminiscent of Super Meat Boy. The simple controls cater to the Steam Deck, since you won’t need a lot of buttons to best this puzzle platformer extravaganza.
Hades – $13 (down from $25)
Fans of roguelikes are probably already familiar with this title since it has garnered many praises and awards in the last year. The game has you take control of Zagreus, son of Hades. Zagreus is quite bored with life in the Underworld. Thus your main quest is to reach the surface and contact your estranged mother. But getting through the hordes of enemies that stand in your way through the multiple layers of Hell will be no easy task. And defeating Hades himself will require some practice and skill on your part. This is an excellent game for the Steam Deck since most of the controls already cater to using a gamepad.
Rogue Legacy 2 – $19 (down from $25)
Another roguelike game that is a great purchase, Rogue Legacy 2 is a follow-up to an older classic. It improves on all aspects of the first game with some great 2D graphics that bring this new world to life in all its cartoony glory. You will have to make your way through a cursed castle with the help of your randomly generated character. After you die (and you will die a lot), your new character will inherit some of the perks or skills of your former character. The Steam Deck is a perfect platform for this game, allowing you to take your adventures on the go.
Elden Ring – $42 (down from $60)
What more is there to say about Elden Ring, winner of the Game of the Year award? If you’ve missed the opportunity of exploring the world of the Lands Between, this is an excellent chance. The Steam Deck is a perfect home for this title that should generally be played with a gamepad, and now you can take it with you. Performance is excellent on the Steam Deck, even if you are limited to 720p. Even so, the world of Elden Ring is still breathtaking, and the excellent gameplay will have you returning for more.
Stardew Valley – $9 (down from $15)
This indie darling that came out of nowhere in 2016 quickly became a hit. Offering a world full of life and adventure, Stardew Valley puts you in the shoes of a person that inherits an abandoned farm from their grandfather. It will be up to you to turn this barren plot into a thriving farm while dealing with the many NPCs of the neighbouring town. The laid-back gameplay of Stardew Valley makes it an excellent choice for your Steam Deck. And playing it on the go is perfect since you can always find some tasks you can finish in under 20 minutes.
While the Steam Deck supports most of the Steam library of games, some games are a better fit for a portable console. Check the Steam Christmas Sale until the end of December, there are countless more games that might pique your interest.
