Fancy visiting Tokyo? How about an Anime Tokyo built with Unreal Engine 5?
Yan Ru is creating a piece of art called Anime Tokyo that allows you to explore a 3D Tokyo that has been turned into anime with the help of Unreal Engine 5. Although more places might be included in the following iteration of the demo in a few months, it now only includes a few Shibuya city blocks in and around the 109 dep store, which in this reality carries a banner for Project Anime Tokyo rather than an advertisement for the newest iPhone or whatever.
The cool project was posted on Youtube and on the official Unreal Engine forum and it rapidly got appreciation from the users.
It’s a cartoon reproduction of the city, as the name indicates. Depending on which of its three filters you select, your avatar, a purple-haired girl, may make the buildings glow in anime-pink or add up deep-blue effects. Additionally, there are filters for sunny and gloomy weather, with promises of rain and snow in an eventual update. Each one places you in a different location. There are rarely more than a few vehicles and people surrounding the Shibuya Scramble at any given moment in the virtual Tokyo, despite the appearance of activity and bustle created by ambient sounds and music.
As we already have a few games happening in Tokyo, like Ghostwire: Tokyo, Tokyo Dark and some parts of the Yakuza games, one might say that the game might find bringing something new difficult. However, this is hardly true as Yan Ru’s creation looks stunningly fresh and way more realistic.
If you want to try out the game, you can get it from Yan Ru’s Artstation page here. The 1.7GB file appears to have been rather well-liked and has resided in a few different temporary locations. At the time of writing, you may download it through Mega, Google Drive or OneDrive. Yan Ru says it will also be accessible on Steam a bit later.
Once you are in the game, by hitting P, you can activate photo mode. Shift toggles running and space lets you jump.
