With the Switch nearing the six-year mark, it’s only natural that Nintendo is ready to launch a new console in the near future.

It was recently revealed in this Eurogamer piece that at this year’s latest Gamescom Nintendo gave a sneak peak to industry people of their new upcoming console. And it has been a long time coming with plenty of rumors that came out in the past year. While the Switch can still come out with some fantastic titles like Tears of the Kingdom which does some amazing things with the limited tech, it’s time for an upgrade.

One of the demos shown at Gamescom was a version of Breath of the Wild that ran at a higher resolution and FPS. The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo was also shown running on the device which would put it closer with the newest consoles from Microsoft and Sony. To make this demo run smoothly, it uses Nvidia’s DLSS technology, which upscales the resolution while also enabling ray-tracing. They did make a point of saying that while this is a huge upgrade compared to the Switch, this does not mean it will directly compete with the PlayStation 5 or the Xbox Series X when it comes to graphical fidelity.

While there is no announced release date for this new console, most experts estimate a release in the second half of 2024. Personally, I’m curious to see how Nintendo will handle cross-compatibility with the Switch since they’ve had some missteps in the past in that regard.
