After announcing the game as a cooperative Third-Person Shooter, developers have decided to make an interesting switch.

With FPS games still being one of the most successful genres out there, it’s only normal that various sub-genres would evolve over the years. After the success of the Battle Royale games that kept popping up left and right in the past few years, it seems that the genre is realigning again. More and more extraction shooters are coming out, ever since Escape from Tarkov proved to be a huge success. But EFT is struggling with plenty of issues of its own, so plenty of developers are aiming for the throne.

The developers over at Embark Studios have been working on ARC Raiders since 2021, and their initial plans were to make a third-person shooter focused on cooperative play. But just recently they announced in a blog post that they’re going to make a rather interesting switch. They’ve now decided to turn the game into a PvPvE extraction shooter.

ARC Raiders takes place on the planet of Calabretta, a futuristic colony that is being ravaged by a mechanized threat known only as ARC. And this is where the players come in. You will step into the shoes of a Raider, trying to scavenge your way to a big pay-day. Due to the situation that the colony is currently in, resources are scarce and prices are higher than ever. But getting your hands on those precious resources is easier said than done.

While you’ll be fending off AI robots that will try to turn you into a bullet sponge, it’s opposing players that you should be fearing. In classic extraction shooter fashion, PvP is always a viable option. Why struggle to scrounge for resources yourself when you can simply hunt other players down to get your paws on their loot. Quick decision making will be the name of the game, since you can also cooperate with any player you encounter. But the real question is, can you really trust them?

ARC Raiders is slated for a late 2023 launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. PC players will be able to play it on both Steam and Epic Games. If you’re interested in trying out the beta version of ARC Raiders, you can sign up for it on the game’s Steam page. Simply sign up and developers will contact you whenever they’re accepting players for their next beta stage.
