From stealth games to RPGs, now back to stealth.
The first gameplay trailer for Assassin’s Creed Mirage was freshly revealed at this week’s PlayStation Showcase and it just proves how the next assassin game from Ubisoft is returning the franchise to its origins: stealth. Even though the compact and amazing video is under two minutes long, it is kind of filled with information. Let’s see why I say this over the next few rows.
Let’s start with the storyline: you will guide Basim in Assassin’s Creed Mirage. He is the man who was essential to the storyline of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Mirage may be considered a prequel as these things happen 20 years before he meets Eivor. You will be working with the original Assassins, the Hidden Ones and Roshan (played by Emmy-winning actor Shohreh Aghdashloo) will be your mentor.
Assassinations, parkour and stealth!
Although the current RPG era of Assassin’s Creed is heavily referenced in the narrative, it appears like the gameplay is pretty close to the original approach. We can see that it offers an urban city map with a design philosophy that is directly inspired by the original games with the plot set in Baghdad in the ninth century. There are no open fields to be seen, but there are plenty of free-running routes created by the streets, roofs, and towers. So being so oriented to the free run and tricks makes the game really close to its origins. This is the most Assassin’s Creed as it gets.
Moving on, I think it is safe to say that the combat is also returning to its origins. Multiple types of assassinations, the focus, which enables you to perform multiple stealth kills in a row and a little bit of swordplay, to ensure there is still some action. The developers also added multiple stealth moves, which we haven’t seen for some time. For example, at some point, Basim follows an enemy and pickpockets a key.
Another thing about the upcoming game are options we will be having in fulfilling tasks and missions. The video shows the option to bribe the guards, go stealthy and assassinate guards, or maybe even go full-rage and kill them all. The choice is entirely yours, and that is awesome. This really brings the original Assassin’s Creed Unity vibe back and lets us wonder how things will settle once the game is released. In my opinion, the stealth idea and returning to the origins is really cool but there is a fine line between being a success and a complete disaster, removing so many of the RPG elements. In any case my friends, remains to be seen. Basim, don’t let us down!
