Bungie just announced their highly anticipated extraction shooter, which is based on one of their older titles.
With extraction shooters gaining more and more traction, it doesn’t come as a surprise that more big studios are working on their own titles. The latest comes from Bungie, the esteemed studio that gave us the Halo and Destiny franchises. While Destiny 2 is still chugging along with new content constantly coming out, it makes sense that Bungie is also looking toward the future. And Marathon is their answer to the newest fad to hit the shooter genre.
Original Marathon game
The original Marathon game was launched in 1994 and was a Doom-like FPS set in a futuristic universe. Nowadays the game looks like a laughable Doom clone, but there are a lot of features that were pretty unique for its time. Even the fact that it tried to have a somewhat complex story that was relayed to the player through consoles scattered throughout levels was an interesting choice.
Apparently, though, the new Marathon game won’t offer any single-player while still referencing the world of this older title. People who are familiar with the 80’s movie Running Man might see a lot of common elements with Marathon, even though Marathon doesn’t seem to have the dystopic reality show spin.
A new Marathon for a modern audience
The newly announced Marathon game will take place in 2850, where cloning and synthetic bodies have become a norm for humans. Players will take control of Runners and face off against other players in arenas where speed is key to success. To help you come out on top you’ll have your usual fare of weapons to use, like futuristic-looking assault or sniper rifles.
Bungie has talked about how levels will be persistent and evolving zones that will keep things interesting. This is good to hear since most extraction shooters have fixed maps which can become quite boring after spending a lot of time with the game. No further details have been given about Marathon, so we have no idea if the game will also feature PvE.
Bungie was reluctant to say anything about a launch date, but the studio has stated in the past that they’re planning to launch at least one new game by 2025. Scott Taylor, Bungie’s general manager had this to say: “While I can’t give a timeline on when that information will be coming what I can say is this: The next time you hear from us about Marathon, we’ll be able to show you the gameplay and will be much closer to launch.”
Marathon will be coming out for PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and will feature full cross-play and cross-save functionality.
