The Unity Game Engine is known for being used to make amazing games, here are just a few Examples.
The Unity game engine has been around for a while, almost 20 years in fact. Despite this there still exists an undercurrent opinion among the gaming public that games made with the engine are somehow identifiable with terms like amateur, shovelware, asset flips, etc. If you are one of those gamers, let this list show you just how many amazing games of all shapes and sizes were developed on the Unity game engine. Perhaps you’ve even played and loved some of these yourself without even knowing they were Unity games.
I’ve purposefully chosen vastly different games for this auspicious list, none of them can be said to occupy the same genera. This isn’t a list of the most popular Unity engine games, it’s a varied collection of what I believe are some of the best games made with Unity by brilliant and talented creators.
Escape From Tarkov
You can’t talk about the best unity games without mentioning Escape From Tarkov, one of the few big Unity games that go for a photo-realistic art style, Escape from Tarkov is a worldwide phenomenon that practically invented the ‘Extractor Shooter’ sub-genera. If you like punishing and tactical multiplayer shooting gameplay, you won’t find better than Escape from Tarkov.
Outer Wilds
A planet hopping time-looping mystery adventure where the sense of wonder you get for every new discovery during every new run is unmatched by even AAA RPGs like The Witcher, Assassin’s Creed and The Elder Scrolls. If you like puzzles, engaging storytelling, a fantastic sense of place, and surprisingly great platforming mechanics Outer Wilds is definitely worth checking out.
Hearthstone
By far the most popular digital CCG game on the market, Blizzard took what was great about games like Magic: The Gathering and added mechanics and complexity that could only be done in a Digital CCG. As you’ll see in the honorable mentions below, Hearthstone basically set the standard for all big CCGs to be made in Unity. More decks are added every year and the Hearthstone meta constantly shifts so there is always a reason to keep playing.
Hollow Knight
A masterclass on how to make a punishing action platformer with a Metroidvania-type world and progression system, it even has a smattering of rogue-lite features. Hollow Knight has had everyone who played the original in a state of perpetual withdrawal for over five years now waiting for the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong.
Oxygen Not Included
A 2D “habitat” simulation game that throws everything and the kitchen sink at the player when it comes to the simulation off-world colonies in hazardous environments. You have to care about, atmospheric gasses, plumbing, waste disposal, energy generation, minion hygiene, minion psychology, technology research, resource management, and more. It sounds overwhelming but Oxygen Not Included presents it all in a tidy and easy-to-understand management system that’s easy to learn but provides near-infinite depth.
Valheim
If you lived under a rock for the better part of 2021 and through 2022 you could be forgiven for not knowing about Valheim, which is one of the best overwhelmingly positive games on Steam. But if you didn’t, I think I can safely assume you’ve heard of Valheim and know how it works, if you haven’t played it yourself. It’s a typical survival game in many ways, but what sets Valheim apart is that it thankfully gets rid of a lot of the tedious busywork other survival games typically saddle the player with, leaving only fun and adventure.
Beat Saber
Two lightsabers, awesome music, and VR, what more do you need to know? Beat Saber is a music rhythm game akin to Guitar Hero, but instead of hitting buttons on a plastic guitar, you’re swinging virtual lightsabers at incoming boxes timed to the music. It’s incredibly fun, and if you go on the higher difficulties; a rather effective cardio workout.
Gunfire Reborn
Gunfire Reborn is like Hades meets Doom 2016, you progress through 4 large chapters defeating waves of enemies and bosses with a large variety of weapons. As you progress you unlock randomized upgrades to both your character and weapons that synergize together in unique and satisfying ways as you chase ever higher damage numbers.
Among Us
If you’ve ever played the tabletop games Secret Hitler, Werewolf or Mafia, you’ll be familiar with the core gameplay of Among Us. You are a group of astronauts on a space station but one of you is a traitor, killing off members of the group one by one. Once you think you know who the killer is (if it isn’t you) call a vote and try to convince the others to kick them off the station based on your word alone.
Cuphead
How about a classic run-and-gun game with gameplay similar to classics like Contra or even G-Darius but with a 100% unique-not-just-saying-that art style? From the video thumbnail alone you can immediately tell that no other game has ever looked like this. It’s not just a looker either, the gameplay is fantastic as well, and the two-player coop is an even more difficult experience.
