Even though Steam is a given nowadays for any type of PC gamer, there was a time when this type of service seemed like an impossibility.
Whether it’s due to shoddy internet connections or other connectivity issues, plenty of people saw the advent of gaming platforms like Steam as wishful thinking. Similarly to how we viewed games through streaming at first, plenty of people were skeptical. But nowadays every big player in the gaming world has their own platform, which has become somewhat of a nuisance if you asked me. Even smaller developers are getting into this game by forcing users to access their games through their platforms alone.
But back in 2003, Steam was merely an experiment run by Valve to see if they could pull it off. Up to 300,000 players opted into it’s beta test ahead of the official launch on September 12, 2003. In January of this year Steam had a record breaking 33 million people online at the same time, which is quite the number. And with plenty of competition around, none of them can truly even make a dent in the success of Steam. This is a combination of being first as well as having excellent customer service and plenty of yearly offers that keep people coming back for more.
So let’s all raise a glass in honor of the best gaming platform out there and wish them a happy birthday and many more years of Summer Sales to keep our wallets busy.
