With Armored Core 6 on the horizon sometime later this year, fans of mecha games are excited about the latest announcement for Hawken Reborn.

The first Hawken game was a PvP-focused mecha brawler that did many things right. The tight controls made you feel like you were on board a futuristic killing machine as you took out opposing players with impudence. But sadly, after a year or two of struggling to maintain an active player base, the project was completely shuttered, at least on PC. A PlayStation version was still available for a bit, but that one also ended up in disaster.

If PvP failed, what about PvE?

The developers over at 505 Games seem to have learned a lesson from the first Hawken, and Hawken Reborn will focus entirely on PvE. This Early Access release will allow you to take part in six different missions as you try to unravel the mysteries of Illal. Random missions will also pop up on your radar as you explore this planet, giving you some more enemies to take on.

And no mecha game would be complete without giving you total freedom in how you want to equip each combat mech. As you gain more XP, you can also upgrade their abilities and tweak weapons and other subsystems. Since the game’s main focus is for you to go out and scavenge for resources, these upgrade systems will be a big part of it.

If you’re excited about some exciting mecha PvE action, Hawken Reborn will be out in Early Access on Steam on May 17. Here’s hoping it’ll stick this time, and we might even get some PvP modes in the future.
