The Horizon Call of the Mountain universe will be seen through the new eyes of the upcoming game’s protagonist, Ryas. Guerilla’s Community Manager, Chante Goodman, has just published a post on the PlayStation blog describing what the adventure will feel like.
Guerilla together with Sony has been teasing Horizon Call of the Mountain, a forthcoming PlayStation VR2 adventure game debuting on February 22, over the past few months. They wanted to take the time today to help us get to know Ryas, the character you’ll be playing as you experience a brand-new narrative in the Horizon universe.
Horizon Call of the Mountain: Ryas
The deadly Red Raids, a horrific series of assaults and ritual sacrifices carried out by the Carja against its surrounding tribes, are still having an impact on the Carja Sundom.
After the Mad Sun-King Jiran was ousted by his son Avad, these raids that caused untold suffering to people’s lives came to a stop. The repercussions of Jiran’s leadership tore the Carja tribe apart, with those relieved that he had been overthrown staying in the Sundom and Jiran’s supporters breaking into the castle at Sunfall and rebuilding as the Carja in Shadow.
One of these soldiers was Ryas, the main character of Horizon Call of the Mountain. Ryas wants to atone for his involvement in the kidnapping of young Prince Itamen from his home in Meridian and reclaim his dignity.
Our hero was spared death by allowing himself to be taken prisoner and held by the Carja. He is now being sought out by Blameless Marad and Sun-King Avad. Ryas, a skilled climber, archer, and hunter, must gain his release in return for looking into a fresh danger. Ben McCaw, the Studio Narrative Director at Guerrilla, presented this another explanation:
“Ryas ended up on the wrong side for the right reasons. His family was torn apart, and ultimately, he was incarcerated. This is the story of how he tries to come back from that”.
Ryas has a perilous journey ahead of him, but even though he could be the only person capable of completing it, he won’t go it alone. Players will encounter new characters and reconcile with old ones along the route, but Ben says that his past has damaged these connections: “Having fought for the Shadow Carja, Ryas’ relationship with these characters is at best adversarial. He needs to make inroads and amends if he hopes to be accepted”.
Chante further explains in the PlayStation blog about another character: “Take Hami, for example, a stalwart soldier for the Carja Sundom who was spared the horrors of the Red Raids thanks to her posting as a Border Guard. Even she is unable to forgive or forget the atrocities caused by the Shadow Carja, having lost many friends and comrades to the conflict. Known for her sharp wits and quick temper, Hami resents the task of escorting Ryas. Her hatred for what Ryas represents is just one of the challenges he will face”.
Through Ryas, a captivating new protagonist, and the PSVR2 headset, players will be able to view the world of Horizon from a fresh angle in Horizon Call of the Mountain. We will be completely immersed in Horizon Call of the Mountain, which places us in the most thrilling heights of the Sundom and beyond thanks to haptic feedback, clever eye tracking, and an incredibly wide field of vision.
Horizon Call of the Mountain is one of the most expected games for 2023, and the showcase for PSVR2. We honestly can’t wait to see the world through Ryas’ eyes!
