One MMO to rule them all, One MMO to find them, One MMO to bring them all, and in the gaming bind them
Feeling a little nostalgic about Lord of the Rings? Well, Amazon is planning a second shot at creating a Lord of the Rings MMO game. The Embracer Group, a media firm that owns the rights to The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit announced their partnership with Amazon today for a new open-world MMO centred in a world set in Middle-earth. The development will be overseen by Amazon’s Orange County studio, the same group that created the 2021-released MMO New World. While the game is said to be in its early stages of development, no release date has been officially announced yet. Let’s hope this time they will get it right.
A second shot at a Lord of the Rings MMO
The business will make a second effort at a Lord of the Rings MMO with this project as about two years ago when the other title was first announced, it got abandoned shortly after. The Rings of Power, an expensive Lord of the Rings series that Amazon also offers on Prime Video, won’t have any influence on the planned MMO game being developed by Amazon Games, according to the firm. This was posted on Twitter from the official page a few hours ago:

The announcement coincides with Amazon’s continued expansion into the video game market, particularly in terms of publishing. The business, in addition to creating New World, also collaborates with Bandai Namco on the upcoming online game Blue Protocol, as well as publishing Smilegate’s Diablo-style game Lost Ark.
Will all this, we can say that Middle-earth is experiencing a rather busy period for gaming. Why? We’ll tell you why. Gollum, a game starring the infamous character is scheduled to release this year and EA just released its mobile game Heroes of Middle-earth. A fantasy-themed video game is currently being developed by Weta Workshop, the visual effects studio behind the Lord of the Rings films and last but not least, the Lord of the Rings Online, the first Middle-earth MMO, is still running.
That being said, all we can hope is this time the project will go as planned and it won’t be cancelled.
