NCSoft is trying its hand at a different genre of games after critical success with MMOs like Guild Wars and Lineage. But we must wait and see if this will pan out for them.
NCSoft is a South Korean video game company that has existed since 1997. Their first game was the MMO Lineage which quickly became a huge success, especially in the Asian market. In 2003 they followed it up with Lineage 2, which gained immense global success and is still played today. Even though they’ve dabbled with other genres over the years, MMOs have remained their bread and butter.
So while they’re still working hard on their upcoming MMO called AION 2, it’s interesting to see them try to branch out into other genres as well. They’ve recently announced a title called Project G, which aims to bring massive-scale battles to the RTS genre. From the gameplay trailer, it looks like a mix of mobile games in the vein of Clash of Clans combined with actual RTS gameplay.
NCSoft promises this game will reinvent the RTS genre, bringing MMO elements into the fray. The experience they’ve gained in creating MMOs will allow them to bring large-scale battles between multiple opponents. The graphics look great, with hundreds of units on the screen simultaneously.
Project G will be coming out for Microsoft Windows and mobile platforms. No official launch date has been given yet.
