Hogwarts Legacy will have you create your child wizard and join the eponymous School of Magic. It features a robust character creator, giving you plenty of options to create a unique avatar. You even get to go through the sorting hat event. We’ve yet to see how this process will work exactly.

The story is set in the 1800s, hundreds of years before the story of the books. This will give the creators a free hand in creating their own stories without interfering with the canon of the books.

You will then experience life at Hogwarts through the eyes of a new student. Attending classes, learning new spells, and practicing those spells will be a big part of the game. NPCs will offer you various quests in true RPG fashion. Broomstick flying will also be present, giving you true freedom of movement while traveling through the open world.

This trailer showcases how combat will work in the game, showing a player character practicing his magic powers. Most spells that you can wield have a combo system. Repeatedly casting the same spell will deal increased damage, among other effects, depending on the spell itself. Spell effects can also interact with each other, giving you plenty of room to experiment.

But some fans of the Harry Potter universe were a bit shocked by one particular part of the showcase. After entering the Dark Arts Battle Arena, the player character casts Avada Kevadra, instantly killing a man. While video games do have to take some liberties when recreating a setting, this is still pretty weird. The Dark Arts spells were famously used by villains of the series or only in the direst of situations by the heroes. So while it might look cool on paper, this doesn’t fit the setting all that well.

The trailer also shows of some of the customization options. Your character can choose his outfits out of a variety of options. He also has his own Room of Requirement that can be customized to your liking. This will allow you to create your little nook that feels like home.
