Ubisoft just announced that the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake will not be cancelled, despite the pre-orders being cancelled and refunded.
Why did Ubisoft cancel pre-orders then?
The reason behind the refunded pre-orders is that the long-delayed game does not currently have a release date. Since it was first announced in September 2020, the Prince of Persia remake was delayed no less than three times.
Currently being developed at Ubisoft Montréal.
In the update provided by Ubisoft, they mentioned that the Prince of Persia remake is currently under development at the Montréal site, one of Ubisoft’s largest locations. It was initially developed at Ubisoft’s India studio, but we can assume the change was done when the official trailer sparked controversy at the moment it was posted.
The video game publisher also announced that beyond the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, they currently don’t have any plans to remake other games from the series.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time official trailer
Since the official trailer for the Prince of Persia remake first aired, the internet did not go easy on Ubisoft’s India Studio, criticising the way it looked, mainly the character’s facial animation.
Another concern was the character movement. Since the game features time-altering mechanics like rewinding or slow motion, this might prove challenging when using Ubisoft’s favourite engine, Anvil, the same used in the making of the Assassin’s Creed series.
The development team’s answer for the public was that when you have such an iconic game as Prince of Persia, you have to deliver an appropriate feeling of the game. However, the internet did not see it this way and the studio had to face the truth (pun intended).
