With the ongoing success of Risk of Rain 2, it seems as if the developers are still committed to the first game as well. They’ve just announced a remake of the first Risk of Rain, bringing plenty of new content alongside enhanced graphics.

Surprising success

A small team of students first developed Risk of Rain. To complete and launch the game, they crowdfunded it through Kickstarter. After getting some success with Kickstarter, developer Chucklefish offered them a deal. Thus they launched Risk of Rain in 2013 for PC. It then won the Best Student Game award in 2014 at the Independent Games Festival. Due to its success, the game was later ported to Mac, Linux, Playstation 4, Nintendo Switch, Playstation Vita, and Xbox One.

Even though roguelikes had been around for some time, Risk of Rain brought fresh air to the genre. First and foremost, the fact that it was real-time in a genre that was dominated mainly by turn-based titles. Then you had the unique classes, each with its abilities and playstyles. Countless upgrades were at your disposal, giving you plenty of variety in every run. Artifacts were also present, game modifiers that could drastically alter gameplay to your liking. And last but not least, you had unique enemies and bosses that were just difficult enough to keep you on your toes at all times.

The developers have proudly stated that this won’t be just a fresh coat of paint like other remakes. The game has been rebuilt from the ground up and will include some features from the 3D sequel. Among these, you will find new upgrades, enemies, and artifacts. Multiplayer has also been enhanced since the original Risk of Rain had various multiplayer issues. Local co-op will also be improved, allowing you to share the experience with your friends from the comfort of your couch.

People looking forward to using their old Risk of Rain saves will be sad to hear that they won’t be compatible. This makes sense since the developers have also stated that all characters will receive upgrade paths with entirely new abilities at their disposal. As if this game needed even more variety, now you can mix and match those abilities to create the perfect character for your playstyle.

Risk of Rain Returns will be released sometime next year for Windows PC and Nintendo Switch.
