NVIDIA is still working hard on their RTX Remix platform that promises easy visual enhancements for older titles with ease.
After showing off their new tech with Portal RTX, NVIDIA is still adding new features to the RTX Remix modding platform. To put it plainly, the RTX Remix suite will allow modders to add modern lighting and textures to older games easily. And the results are pretty impressive, especially on games created for DirectX 8 and 9.
With just a few clicks, modders can capture a scene from an older game and easily implement newer tech. This includes Ray-Tracing, Path Tracing, DLSS 3, NVIDIA Reflex, and AI-enhanced textures. And on top of all that, they can also export those new assets into other developer applications like Unreal Engine or Blender. This gives modders even more freedom to tweak everything to their liking.
Even VR support can be added to any game, even though this will require a bit more legwork to implement VR controls. The camera position of any game can also be tweaked, meaning you can easily turn an FPS into a third-person shooter. Modern volumetric systems can also enhance graphical features like smoke or fire.
And this isn’t even the full package. While RTX Remix can only modify existing assets within a game world, NVIDIA is working on the RTX Remix Creator Toolkit. This package will give modders even more tools to add their own assets to any title. And on top of that, any of those assets can also be upscaled with AI.
To demonstrate the capabilities of RTX Remix, NVIDIA has shown an enhanced variant of The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. With a single click, RTX Remix can pull every single asset out of a particular scene and then enhance them with the help of AI. Another title that helped NVIDIA show off its new tech is Portal RTX. Despite being 15 years old, seeing it in this new light is amazing. While textures still look somewhat dated, the lighting breathes new life into the graphical output of this game.
Since RTX Remix came out, modders have already shown great results with games like Roblox or World of Warcraft. And the possibilities are endless, which is very exciting for retro gaming fans. And since all of these runtimes will be offered for free by NVIDIA, this is one of the best moments to get into modding.
The source code for RTX Remix can be downloaded from GitHub starting today. Modders will have to wait a bit longer until the Creator Toolkit comes out though. To help users out, NVIDIA has also created a Discord server where you can ask for help straight from their engineers.
