The term ‘simcade’ has been used throughout the years to describe a racing subgenre that has sim-racing enthusiasts divided.
What is a Simcade racing game?
Simcade racing games are a combination between a simulator racer and an arcade racing game. Just as a reference, the Trackmania franchise would be considered an arcade racing game, while iRacing would be a simulation racing game. But what’s the difference between these games and their sub-genres? Well, there’s obviously a huge difference between the mentioned games, but as for the sub-genres, there’s a thin line I’m going to try and explain below.
Simulation racing
Simulation racing games are usually designed for racing enthusiasts that spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on simulation gear starting from a Logitech G29 wheel, to a full Fanatec racing set. These Simulation racers, or Sim racing games as they are called, aim to be as accurate as possible with their physics, weather, ground materials, collisions, mechanical damage, track rules, and so much more.
Arcade racing games
Arcade racing games, on the other hand, are easy to play, usually with a controller, from a comfy couch while having a beer with a friend or two. Basically, a racing game that is more casual to play. Simcade comes into play when these two subgenres collide for a sub-subgenre. We’re deep into sim racing inception territory right now, gotta be careful and push the brake pedal. Now, onto our bread and butter for this article, the Simcade sub-subgenre. I’m going to recommend a list of simcade racing games I believe to be just in that sweet spot between simulation and arcade racers. These can be fun to play with a controller or a steering wheel without having to worry too much about ‘realistic’ vehicle behaviour and just enjoy the ride!
Gran Turismo 7

Another nostalgia trip and a perfect example of a simcade is the original Test Drive Unlimited! Arcade, Simcade, who cares?
So there you have it, ten examples of simcade racing games. I should point out that this term, simcade, is subjective, and there is a lot of controversy of what if means, or even if this subgenre exists at all. In my opinion, all good games are worth playing, even if they are more arcadey or simulated. I sometimes get the urge to drive a direct drive in Assetto Corsa and be as precise as possible while driving. Other times I just want to wreck 10 vehicles in Wreckfest, it’s as simple as that. To answer the question in the article title, simcade racers are for everyone to enjoy, it’s the perfect blend between an easy and hard racing game.
