A cooperative FPS game set in the Starship Troopers universe has just released in Early Access on Steam.

The original Starship Troopers movie that came out in 1997 was an interesting spin on the anti-war movie set in a Sci-Fi universe. Based on the Robert Heinlein book by the same name, Starship Troopers is set in a futuristic universe where humanity is conquering the stars. But when they encounter an alien race of buglike creatures, all hell breaks loose. The Terran Federation Army starts an all-out war with them, leading to massive casualties all across our solar system.

While the original movie was a satirical look at the negative influence of militaristic mentality on human society, most people only saw some cool SF action. The game foregoes that twist, instead opting to throw you into the shoes of a Marine as you take down endless waves of bugs. This title first started out as a mod for Squad, quickly becoming one of the more popular mods available. It’s good to see that Offworld Industries saw this success as an indication that a huge community of people wanted this game to become a reality.

Starship Troopers: Extermination offers 16-player cooperative missions where the only good bug is a dead bug. You and your team are a part of the Deep Space Vanguard, an elite unit of the Mobile Infantry. Players can step into the shoes of three classes: the Hunter, Operator, and Bastion. Each class has its unique loadout, with other unlockable weapons and gadgets becoming available as you level up.

All missions will take place on Planet Valaka, a mining colony that bugs have overrun. To succeed, you’ll have to build walls, ammo stations, and gun emplacements in order to hold on long enough until you finish your mission objectives. These objectives range from gathering and bringing mining materials back to base or defending an objective until backup can arrive.

You would be mistaken if you’re expecting a game that allows you to take on waves of bugs by yourself. Teamplay is tantamount to success, and sticking with your team is a must. Going out alone will instantly end in tears since bugs can make quick work of you in an instant. The bugs currently have five types of units available, Drone, Warrior, Gunner, Plasma Grenadier, and Tiger Elites. You’ve seen most of these in the movies, except for the Gunner bug which has a ranged attack, allowing him to fight back from a distance.
