If you’re a fan of turn-based strategies and roguelike mechanics, then The Last Spell might be worth trying out.

The Last Spell has been in development for a few years now, launching into Early Access in 2021. But after two years of hard work and bug fixing, the developers at Ishtar Games have just launched the full version of the game.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where unending war and haphazard usage of magic have turned most of the world to ash. And during these long years of strife, a deranged wizard devised a spell that could take out entire cities. Soon enough, every faction was using this spell left and right. And if the destruction weren’t enough, every doomed city would turn into a zombie hive, with hordes of the undead marching outwards in all directions.

To fix this, the last few remaining spellcasters are preparing an incantation that could stop all magic in the world, thus ending the zombie hordes as well. It will be up to you to take control of a commander and his band of mercenaries as you try to fend off the undead hordes.

The Last Spell is a tactical role-playing game where you must defend a city for a set amount of time. You will always be in numerical inferiority, but your characters have plenty of AOE abilities and spells at their disposal. Combining these well will be your key to victory as you save city after city from the looming undead threat.

So if you miss the old style of turn-based strategy where the game mainly aims to destroy you instead of holding your hand, The Last Spell should be on your list. And to top it all off, it features an excellent metal soundtrack that will keep your blood pumping throughout your campaign of zombie eradication. The Last Spell is out now on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
