One of the most succesful open-world survival games in recent memory, Valheim is constantly evolving with new content on the horizon.

Valheim launched in 2022 and quickly became a huge success. The indie developers over at Iron Gate welcomed this success and promised to keep adding content in the coming years. The game throws you into a limbo-like world inspired by Viking mythology. And no, this is definitely not Valhalla. You will have to traverse various biomes as you try to survive in this dangerous world filled with multiple types of enemies. Along the way, you will mine for various metals in order to create better tools and weapons. Building a base is also very important, with plenty of players getting completely lost in upgrading and beautifying their bases.

With the long-awaited Mistlands content patch coming out recently, Valheim is inching closer to the full version developers imagined when they launched the game in Early Access. The Mistlands biome offers a different experience than the already existing biomes. It is a vertical nightmare, with terrain constantly forcing you to go up and down. And on top of that, the actual mist makes it hard to see anything unless you equip the Wisp Light.

Even though the game can be pretty tricky at times, plenty of fans have been asking for some actual difficulty settings. And Iron Gate has just announced that this will be coming soon enough. Here are some of the announced presets:

  • Casual Mode – as the name implies, this is catered to players who want to enjoy the world of Valheim without struggling. Enemies won’t attack on sight unless you attack first, death penalties are completely removed and combat overall is easier.
  • Hammer Mode – this mode fully removes enemies from the game, giving you plenty of breathing space to build your ideal base. Building won’t require any resources, meaning that the huge mountain castle you dreamed of is totally doable without having to gather resources for days on end.
  • Hardcore Mode – at the other end of the spectrum from Casual Mode, Hardcore Mode will test the mettle of veteran players. No map is available, and portals are completely removed, which is exciting news for exploration fans. Death will be even more punishing as your gear and skills will be forever lost.

Developers have stated that all of this is subject to change. And alongside these presets, you will be able to create your own difficulty setting. Players will be able to tweak and modify various aspects of the game to create the perfect experience. So start sharpening those axes and get ready for these new additions. At least these changes will keep us interested until Ashlands finally comes out.
