With boomer shooters, as they’ve been nicknamed by the gaming community, on the rise, developers at Auroch Digital are preparing to launch their own Warhammer 40k inspired title.
Set in the 41st millennium where the Imperium of Man is struggling for survival, Boltgun will put you in the shoes of a Space Marine as you burn the heretic and purge the mutant. And Warhammer 40k fans wouldn’t want it any other way.
Taking inspiration from 90s shooters, Boltgun will instantly throw you into the thick of it. There is no time for any exposition or an actual story. Your mission is simple, kill everything that stands in your way as you traverse intricate levels. To aid you on this mission is your trust boltgun, an iconic weapon from the Warhammer 40k universe. By the looks of it, there are no other weapons at your disposal, but you can upgrade your boltgun as well as change ammo for it for diverse effects.
But while this is a retro-inspired game, a lot of modern technology is hidden underneath the hood. Enemies are fully rendered in 3D, with developers taking shots of them from various angles afterward. These are then pixelated for that vintage look that harkens back to the old Doom games. Foes will also use modern AI, which means they will try their hardest to end your carnage by flanking and encircling you. They can also dynamically spawn depending on your position, meaning you are never safe.
Warhammer 40k: Boltgun will be out for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on May 23.
